The Secrets

The valley floor of Majik came to life with an emporium of color and magic. Wondrous, forbidden creations living in harmony in a supernatural existence struggled for survival. Within the castle walls, the magic was more miraculous. A huge garden replicating the valley and a grid of roads was used daily to train the young apprentices and younger and smaller creatures the ways of the games. The stone wall and the myriad of colored staffs and stones representing each of the four quadrants presented an interesting display of the realm of Majik.

Tibed and I breathlessly watched a carnival of circus games, archery tournaments, and swordplay within the smaller, inner castle wall and four gates towering on each side of the castle and garden. Children were playing with baby dragons, and cubs were getting into mischief. Jugglers and jesters played silly games to entertain themselves. The garden was alive within a miniature scale of the valley floor as eagles, baby dragons, lizards, and wildcats took to the rocks and skies.

Markets lined the inside of the castle walls on all four sides of the towering gates. Each quadrant had a corner of its own within the castle walls. Each was a Headmaster of a different nation, nurturing an individual culture or ideal and sharing a completely sheltered realm from the outside world.

Zac left Jon with the tigers and led us into the castle. The center of the mountain flooring, the last porthole of the regime, was a resting place for the ruling staff of power. Tibed and I strode through the doors.

Zac had hurried to an argument involving a couple of lords and Sephrania, the Empress and Headmistress. Sephrania was high ruler of the Tarak—the people of the dark, the sacred cat people of the catacombs. They had been constructed by her and her people centuries before.

“How dare you mention the possibility when she doesn’t even partake in the games?” Sephrania was frantic but turned and walked away.

Hanna was the point of dispute being next in line to becoming Headmistress, daughter of Ezra. As a Princess and a Protector at the games, she had the authority to choose her own way, leading any game as she chose to. I remembered the stone Hanna had given up and wondered why I had been spared Hanna’s unquestionable wrath.

Headmaster Ezra was leader of the mountain clans. He settled the valley as a place of sacred ritual and a place to practice the darkest and earliest forms of magic. He was ruthless and cunning and was the present Staff Holder and Key Master of Majik.

Zac said, “Headmistress Sasha was once just a witch of the valley, but she won her place as a Headmistress by undermining the rulers of her time, and she nearly singlehandedly conquered the valley. I can’t understand her concerns regarding Headmaster Ezra’s daughter and her dragon.”

“She’s been raising some trouble, has she?” I quickly reminded myself of a dragon of my own safely hiding on the outside of the mountain.

“You mentioned a mistress Sasha.
